There are two main causes for fur loss, the first is called "toxic heat" and the second factor is caused from an internal deficiency, Traditional Chinese Medicine refers to this as Yin and Blood Vacuity fur loss.

Toxic Heat fur loss will present with signs and symptoms of inflammation,  such as red skin,  perhaps there will be the appearance hot spot sores,  there may be intense itching with lots or redness of the skin, and the coat may also be greasy feeling and sparse.

Conversely, when there is fur loss due to Yin and Blood  vacuity  there may be the appearance of dry fur and there has been gradual fur loss via shedding, you will feel dry skin, and there may be sores that appear dry and flakey,  as well as itching that seems to worsen during the winter months.
